Anthracite Coal Mining: "Black Sunlight" ~ 1920s Bray Studios; Pennsylvania Strip & Deep Mining

Silent. Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthracite Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Anthracite... is a hard, compact variety of mineral coal that has a high luster. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%... Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the lion's share of production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Terminology Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal (not to be confused with the German Steinkohle or Dutch steenkool which are broader terms meaning all varieties of coal of a stonelike hardness and appearance, like bituminous coal and often anthracite as well, as opposed to lignite, which is softer), blind coal (in Scotland), Kilkenny coal (in Ireland), crow coal (or craw coal from its shiny black appearance), and black diamond. "Blue Coal" is the term for a once-popular and trademarked brand... Anthracite is similar in appearance to the mineraloid jet and is sometimes used as a jet imitation. Anthracite differs from ordinary bituminous coal by its greater hardness, its higher relative density of 1.3--1.4, and lustre, which is often semi-metallic with a mildly brown reflection. It contains a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter... The moisture content of fresh-mined anthracite generally is less than 15 percent. The heat content of anthracite ranges from 22 to 28 million Btu per short ton (26 to 33 MJ/kg) on a moist, mineral-matter-free basis... Anthracite may be considered to be a transition stage between ordinary bituminous and graphite, produced by the more or less complete elimination of the volatile constituents of the former... History of mining and use In southwest Wales, anthracite has been burned as a domestic fuel since at least medieval times. It was mined near Saundersfoot. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region... By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River... In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917. From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States... Many large public buildings, such as schools, were heated with anthracite-burning furnaces through the 1980s... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery... Coal mining has had a lot of developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers...

SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA COAL MINE COLLAPSE FRESNO BUDDHIST TEMPLE USS LOS ANGELES 53474b

05:48
This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features six segments of historic highlights. A City Collapses! 1921. Smoke and flames rise from building tops in Scranton, Pennsylvania. People scramble over walls to escape the area as the ground collapses into an underground coal mine. Houses are collapsed at weird angles. Boys climb out of a house onto its roof (:10-:53). Buddhist Temple in America Middle 1920s. Japanese Americans enter a Buddhist Temple in Fresno, California. Three leaders bow in front of a shrine. Others bow sitting in the pews (1:00-1:18). Service Deluxe 1928. A strongman dressed as a waiter picks up a tableclothed table with just his teeth. He carries an additional two chairs on each arm and moves the table to a new location has the patrons follow. He uses just his teeth and ropes to pick up a man sitting in a chair. He then stacks chairs on a table and tables on tables and picks them up with his teeth (1:24-2:05). Aviation 1927. The USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) is moored at Lakehurst, New Jersey before launch for its inauguration. The cockpit inside the dirigible is shown, as is the view of Baltimore, Annapolis, and the Washington Monument as it sails over. The Captain looks out through binoculars for the landing. The ground crew looks like ants as they scramble across the field and then secure the airship. President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge christan it the USS Los Angeles (2:10-3:41). Fashions of the Day 1923. The crowd is dressed in 1923 fashions at a dog show. A female trainer wears a masculine-looking coat and pointed shoes. Another pair of women are dressed in calf-length dresses with ruffles on the shirt portion (3:46-4:25). Sports 1925 and 1922. American Helen Wills loses at a tennis match in Paris, France in 1925. In 1922, skiers jump down tall hills at Grand Beach, Michigan. A jumper falls and slides down the hill, injured. The crowd rushes out to help. Olympic ski jumper Anders Haugen wins the competition (4:28-5:37). We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! 7 Men Remain Buried Under Keel Ridge Mine | Jason Asselin

32:49
DO NOT ENTER THIS MINE LOCATION OR ANY, IT'S A FELONY! (Dickinson County, Michigan) - Special thanks to Dickinson County Mine Inspector Steve Smith for taking me on this visit to see what remains of the old KEEL RIDGE MINE where 7 men still lie buried underground! He takes me on a special tour of this mine which sits on private property and explains to me what he has done to make this area safe for everyone. See all the deep shafts and adits that are gated now protecting the bats that live there, learn about mining in this area! Believe it or not.. Years after those 7 men fell to their death and are buried in this very spot, they mined under them and just kept on going! Steve talks about other mines in the area and how they all connect to each other.. I also talk with him about the Millie Hill Bat Cave and how he saved it from destruction! We almost didn't have it when they wanted to fill it.. Watch the video, you'll be amazed! PLAN ON SEEING MANY MORE MINE TOURS!! THIS ENTIRE VIDEO WAS FILMED USING MY GOPRO HERO4 BLACK. TELL ME ABOUT THE TAR OR COAL FOUND AT WOODLAND SCHOOL! | Jason Asselin

55:04
I secretly recorded this conversation in 2014 at Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford, Michigan during a meeting with the Director of Arcadis, the company getting methane out of ground and an engineer, also the Superintendent for Breitung Township Schools was there and a few others. I thought we were meeting to discuss this strange black material my son found buried near the playground. Instead they talked to me about METHANE and wanted to show me how SAFE the school was. To me it seemed strange and not even on the subject I wanted to discuss, but we finally did near the end of this meeting. During this meeting I felt as though I was being misled a few different times, especially when they talked about the school being built on virgin grounds, never used for anything. That was a lie. The look on their faces when I pulled out a map from 1938 was priceless, they were not expecting that, I could tell. It clearly shows the school was built in an old railroad storage yard. Listen to him back track as he see's stuff on the map. I know the school is safe from methane, I never had any fear about it. I did however have an issue with them ignoring the problem at hand we were there to discuss, to me it seemed as if they wanted to avoid the subject. As if they were hiding something, like they did when telling me it was built on virgin ground..... Burning Ghost Town In Centralia, Pennsylvania

02:53
If you thought the horror movie Silent Hill was fiction, you should visit Centralia, Pennsylvania. This abandoned ghost town has had a fire burning underground for over 50 years! Due to constant spontaneous combustion and oxidation, this mysterious old coal mine is completely out of control! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Most SHOCKING Biological Weapons Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/W0Yli9y7YAk Watch our "Top 5 Most Mysterious and Powerful Secret Societies" video here: https://youtu.be/0Lu4Uvc5EhA Watch our "DEADLIEST Ship Disaster In History!" video here: https://youtu.be/8cNBVZMoalc Town literally burning for more than 50 years! There is a small town in Pennsylvania that has been burning since 1962. That’s over 50 years! What? How is that even possible? So the issue is that Centralia, Pennsylvania is on top of some of the biggest coal deposits in the world. In the 1800s miners blasted tunnels underground and then abandoned them about 100 years later. No one really knows what exactly caused the fire but the strongest theory is that some burning trash from a landfill accidentally lit the coal near an old entrance to the mine. Yeah this isn’t fog, it’s smoke. Since sometimes coal deposits are under a lot of pressure, it can even ignite without a flame. The oxygen from the empty tunnels created the perfect conditions for the fire to spread. The flames started going deeper and deeper into the surrounding area as more coal burned, and the tunnels continue to take oxygen down from the surface. It is now in a vicious, fiery cycle that is now about 300 feet deep. Coal burns slow and steady and can take ages to burn out. As long as there is enough heat, fuel, and oxygen to keep it going, there’s nothing you can do. They actually tried to put it out by drilling holes into the mine and pouring wet sand down to block off the air supply but it didn’t work. It might not seem like such a big deal since the fire is underground but it really is. The 1000 residents probably didn’t think that is was a big deal either until sulfurous fumes and carbon monoxide almost suffocated everyone in their home. The underground fire fractured the ground making sink holes all over the place. A 12-year-old almost fell in one in 1981. The roads are also affected and have smoke coming out of them! The last time they tried to put it out was in the 1980’s but since then everyone’s just given up. Today about 12 people live in Centralia and it’s a very popular destination for graffiti artists. Check out this artwork all over the road. It also draws UFO seekers... The fire covers 6 square miles and spreads 75 feet every year. While this might seem like a freak accident, these kind of fires are actually pretty common. There are mine fires burning in Wyoming, Australia, Germany, and many other parts of the world. India and China have the most serious problems with hundreds of abandoned mines all over the country. Coal mine fires can burn for centuries and it is estimated that the Central fire could burn for another 250 years!

TRRS 517: Michigan's Iron Ore Trail: The Lake Superior and Ishpeming Ore Dock

13:37
MARQUETTE, MICH - 14 October 2017 The Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad's Ore Dock has stood above the waters of Lake Superior for over a hundred years, serving as the gateway to the steel mills for ore from the Marquette Iron Range. With 200 pockets, this classic gravity-drop pocket dock has served its function continuously since it opened, except for the brief winter shutdown when the lakes freeze over. On a fine mid-October morning, two ships call at the dock: the Tug Victory and barge James L Kuber, along with the Lee A Tregrutha. The back-to-back ships provide a great look at the dock's operations, as the 7 Dock-Hill job is also on duty to help reload the dock, with more ships due within the next 36 hours. In this video, you'll see how ships berth at the dock and take on their load of iron ore. From dumping the ore into the dock to raising and lowering the chutes, it's all here as both the LS&I and Ship crews work to keep the iron ore flowing. CORRECTION: At 14 seconds, the caption is misspelled. The correct name for the ship is James L Kuber and Tug Victory. Saving "The Company Town" From the Koch Bros...

06:21
For the first part of the 20th century - many residents of central Appalachia lived in "company towns" where coal companies ruled - and state and federal governments simply turned a blind eye. The residents worked for the coal mines - lived in company houses - and were paid in company scrip that was useless outside the town. Amazingly - in the 21st century - there are still towns where a single company employs most of the town and poisons everyone in the surrounding area. abandoned ghost town: corydon, pennsylvania

05:03
this town was over a hundred years old when it was abandoned in 1965 as part of the kinzua dam project, and the site is now under the water of a bay of the allegheny river, in the allegheny national forest. the cemetery is up the road a little ways, on a hill overlooking the river. while you actually have to cross the border into new york to get to the cemetery on the hill, the view of the river and surrounding hills is worthwhile. it looks like some people tried to recreate the town by opening a few businesses a short distance east of the original site, maybe in hopes of attracting more people with similar ideas, but it didn't work out and there is an abandoned general store and some other remains there. some people say there was a drought a few years back when the water receded to the point where the remains of the roads and buildings of the original town were once again visible above water for a while. ..... This video was created and uploaded by someone who is homeless. Would somebody finally please help me with the problem I need help with? Information about the problem I need help with can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1Zh-A6CdnvoRuO13Xm_es_7NcXKjEpW7

Winona: A Copper Country Ghost Town - Director's Commentary

04:46
Winona, Michigan, a former copper mining town 33 miles south of Houghton is fast becoming a “ghost town.” The town’s population has shrunk from an estimated 1,000+ in 1920 to perhaps 13 residents today. Noted documentary filmmaker and sociologist, Dr. Michael Loukinen has created this beautiful, fascinating and elegiac film documenting the community’s history and demise.

1940s CHICAGO ILLINOIS SANTA FE TRAIN TRIP & CITY TOUR 46494

23:20
This film, Let's See Chicago presented by the Santa Fe Railroad to promote trans-continental travel. It (:08) takes viewers on a trip to Chicago from Los Angeles beginning at the Union Station in LA (:22). For eastbound travelers, this is where the trip begins using transcontinental streamline trains (:29). From the observation tower at the Board of Trade, we are viewing one of America's largest inland cities (1:49). During the gold rush, Chicago only hosted a few business blocks and roads of mud (2:03) yet, now was home to nearly 3 1\2 million and became the second largest populated cities in the western hemisphere (2:11). Due to the city’s geographical location, it achieved great industrial enterprises, merchant institutions, and markets for grain and livestock (2:07). The elevated railroad (2:40) would be replaced by subways around the ‘loop’ (refers to the city's business section). State Street includes the richest retail and trading area in the country. Along LaSalle Street (3:12) are many brokerage and banking offices. The Chicago Board of Trade had become the world’s principal grain market (3:21) and we see the city’s ticket offices of several railroad lines (3:36). Chicago, a fresh water port, sprang from Lake Michigan (3:50). Gazing westward from it, the city's skyline hangs over Michigan Blvd (4:02). In the city's front yard rests the Buckingham Memorial Fountain (4:24). Michigan Blvd also contains the Art Institute and the Opera Building (4:45). We see the Navy Pier (4:50) and the band shell in Grant Park (5:02). The Soldier’s Field (5:09) accommodates events such as sporting, military displays and police and fire shows. Adler Planetarium hosts astronomical exhibits (5:22) and the Field Museum of Natural History boasts natural habitats, resources, and various deep sea creatures (5:26). The city's history began in 1803, at the lakefront, and just south of its original location is Fort Dearborn (5:43). City transportation systems include the “L” and a network of trolleys and bus lines (6:13).The tour leads to the northern section with an old relic of the fire of 1871, the water tower (6:44). Chicago's riverways carry trade, commerce (7:25) and in the summer, sporting. Lake Michigan is also enjoyed along the miles of well guarded beaches (8:44). Lincoln Park is shown (9:26) and many specimens of wildlife are found in Chicago’s zoological gardens. An example being in Brookfield, holding one of the largest collections. The well maintained Garfield Park Conservatory boasts various floral displays seasonally appropriate (12:19).Jackson Park was once the scene of the Columbian exposition that commemorated the 400th anniversary of America's discovery and signified the recovery from fire 20 years earlier (12:59). The Japanese gardens, from this exposition, are a part of the city's legacy (13:17). On the boulevards, the Museum of Science and Industry can be seen (13:28). Trains bring a plethora of produce from the Southwest (13:54). As coal is still the main feul sorce it is imperative mines be accessible to railroads. The demonstration has all been conducted at the Sante Fe railroad display in miniatures at the Museum of Science and Industry (15:03). Nearby is the University of Chicago (15:13). Cook County Forest (15:55) covers more than 33,000 acres and provide winter and summer recreation. Chicago's Union Stockyard is the largest in the world (16:37) and nearby Amphitheater hosts the international livestock exposition (16:48). This city boasts the world’s greatest produce markets (17:20) and South Water market is the center of wholesale produce (18:08). For entertainment, there are annual 5 month seasons of horse racing (18:53), many golf courses (19:20), the Wrigley baseball field (19:47), the football stadium Northwestern University in Evanston (20:29) and an acclectec nightlife on streets like Rush street (21:12). The film ends (23:00) on Chicago's city skyline at night. The film was an Atlas Production. Canadian company buys PBS Coals

00:24
By: WJAC Web Staff TORONTO -- A Canadian coal company has purchased a Somerset County-based coal subsidiary for $60 million, according to a news release issued Tuesday. Corsa Coal Corp., based in Toronto, announced it has purchased PBS Coals in a $60 million cash transaction. "This acquisition is a perfect match for Corsa's strategic vision of building a low cost, premium-quality metallurgical coal producer. Corsa is now positioned with the asset base and financial flexibility required to capitalize on the company's ambitious growth plans," said Corbin Robertson III, Corsa's Chairman and Co-Founder of Quintana Capital Group, the largest shareholder of Corsa. PBS Coals has been owned by Russian-based Severstal since 2008. PBS includes 13 developed mines and two coal preparation plants. Three of the 13 mines are active. Corsa officials said the transaction should be completed by mid-August. There was no immediate information about the status of PBS employees regarding the sale announcement.

Amazing Underground Waterfalls in a Flooded, Abandoned Mine

12:03
The flooded, abandoned mine in this video features several thousand feet of winding, wet, water-filled workings. During our exploration and documentation of this mine, we came across an impressive waterfall cascading down a timbered and laddered raise. Farther in the mine, we found ourselves at the bottom of a large, wooden headframe with ladders and platforms which had water dripping and trickling down it from upper levels. The amazing footage in this video was originally shot in the spring of 2009. However, I misplaced the memory card that held this footage and only found it recently. The card was still intact, and the footage it contained was pristine as the day it was shot. Enjoy! View and use the information in my videos at your own risk. All abandoned mines (especially the ones in my videos) are very dangerous and should not be entered under any circumstances. Potentially life-threatening, dangerous, or legal decisions and assumptions should not be made based on any information in my videos.
