"Hambach forest stays!" - Germany and coal | DW Documentary
The tree houses in Hambach Forest have long symbolized resistance to open-pit lignite mining. Now the authorities are having them removed. German energy giant RWE wants to clear-cut large parts of the forest this autumn to expand its lignite mine. Dozens of activists have been living in tree houses in Hambach Forest in an attempt to save it from being clear-cut for lignite mining. The authorities are now taking action to evict them. Germany energy giant RWE, which owns the land, has already mined much of the lignite in the region. Now it plans to remove most of the remaining woodland to expand its open-pit mine. Antje Grothus refuses to accept that. She lives in a neighboring village and supports the tree house dwellers, saying that, in any case, brown coal is not a fuel for the future. Now a fatal accident has occurred during the eviction. A journalist trying to document it plunged from a rope bridge between two tree houses. The death has strengthened the activists in their conviction that dependence on coal must stop. A report by Viktoria Kleber. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Why there are twice as many solar jobs as coal jobs
America is changing how it gets its energy, and coal is losing out. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO The past decade has seen a revolution in residential solar systems. Cheap panels and creative financing options have led to a massive increase in solar installations-- and that increase is driving an employment boom. At the same time, the coal industry is experiencing a major downturn. But despite the current political rhetoric, it's a downturn that's been in the works for nearly 100 years. Automation, technical advances, and more recently, the rise of cheap natural gas have led to a significant drop in demand, onet that the industry may never recover from. Reclaiming Iowa's abandoned coal mine lands
A century ago, southern Iowa was home to hundreds of surface coal mines. As the coal boom died so did the companies that mined for it, leaving those mines abandoned and open to the elements. Today, decades after the industry died, efforts slowly continue to clean up the deserted mines and reclaim the ground that was once rich with coal. The Coal Town System
West Virginia coal operators built small, company-owned towns for their miners to live in. The coal towns were almost always unincorporated; there were no elected officials, no independent police forces. Owners hired private detective agencies to watch over their workforce. Company towns were also untethered from the free market competition owners usually championed. "The Mine Wars" premieres January 26, 2016 on American Experience PBS.

The Rise and Fall of Coal in McDowell County, West Virginia
See All of the High Quality Images here - http://www.dewitzphotography.com/personal-photography-projects/west-virginia-coal-country-mcdowell-county-part-1/ More photos from my ongoing West Virginia photography project can be seen here - http://www.travisdewitz.com/west-virginia All music by Joshua Black Wilkins - http://www.joshuablackwilkins.com/ My fascination of coal and railroads made this ideal place for me to visit. McDowell County was once home to over 100,000 residents in the 1950's that helped set many coal mining production records. Through the 1960's and 1970's the demand for the county's metallurgical coal remained high. McDowell continued to lead the United States in total coal production. Increased mechanization of coal production had reduced the number of laborers employed, but miners enjoyed quality pay under improving conditions negotiated by the United Mine Workers. During the 1980's the central Appalachian region lost more than 70,000 coal mining jobs. Between 1981 and 1992, according to the U.S. Department of Energy and the United Mine Workers union, coal mining employment in the state of West Virginia decreased by more than 53%. No county in the Appalachian region was more severely distressed by these losses than McDowell County. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 1980, the rate of poverty in McDowell County was 23.5%. By 1990, the poverty rate in McDowell County had climbed to 37.7%, the highest rate of poverty for any county in West Virginia. By 1990, 50.3% of all children in McDowell County were living in families below the poverty level, up from 31.2% in 1980. The major losses in McDowell County during this period were the result of the closing of all mines and facilities operated by the United States Steel Corporation, terminating more than 1,200 jobs. Today the area is still one of the fastest declining populations.

Video #38 - Mining Scrip (New River Company)
Another piece of mining scrip!!! I ended up going back to a house built in the late 30's that I had previously detected... Prior, I had dug a military hat insignia and a piece of mining scrip from Lillybrook Coal Company... Ended up finding more scrip from the company that both my wife's father and my own worked at... Though my dad worked for the company in the "Skelton" mine and was paid with modern currency, my wife's father actually was paid in this exact scrip from this exact mine, "Cranberry"...

ABANDONED Old Mining Settlement and Carbonization Plant AMAZING! - New Zealand
Today we are exploring what is left of a long forgotten mining settlement and carbonization plant. Out of all the explores I've done over the years, nothing has truly compared to the beauty of this amazingly preserved abandoned location. Well off the beaten path, this once booming location now sits quietly rusting away, slowly being reclaimed by nature. Join us as we take a look at what was left behind. Twitter - https://twitter.com/UnchartedTraveI?lang=en Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/uncharted.travel/?hl=en Mining first began in Rotowaro by the Taupiri coal company began after a bridge over the Waikato river and railway to the area were constructed in 1915. The mine instantly saw success, and in 1928, it was producing an average of 11,000 tons of coal every month. Just west of the mine, a small community of about 500 houses was built so that miners could live within close proximity to the mine and increase efficiency. To reduce waste, a carbonization plant was constructed in the 1930's to convert any unusable or low quality coal into carbon briquettes. As the mine progressed, the carbonization plant ran smoothly until 1985 when a major fire on the complex caused a retort to explode releasing mass amounts of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area. After the incident, the plants ownership changed hands several times, and with no one willing to do anything about the toxic wasteland that wast created, the plant was quickly abandoned. Now it lays completely derelict, slowly being taken back by nature, a nod to a now forgotten revolutionary mining period. Thanks for watching! Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining US Group Attacks Chinese Coal Company
A group in the United States called the Tennessee Conservative Union released an advertisement on Monday. The ad supports proposed state legislature that would ban mountain top removal for virgin peaks over 2,000 feet. But behind the ad is concern that a Chinese owned mining company, which has surface rights to about 48 square miles, would cause damage to Tennessee's mountains. [ADVERTISEMENT] "Tennessee has become the first state in our great nation to permit the red Chinese to destroy our mountains and take our coal. The same folks who hold our debt, hack our businesses, and have the worst conservation record in the world." Triple H Coal Company was bought by Chinese state-owned Guizhou Gouchuang Energy Holdings Group last year. This was the first Chinese acquisition of a US coal company, and a top Chinese CEO in the coal industry said Chinese coal companies were interested in further acquisitions. While TCU is worried about the destructive practice of mountain top removal, it is also concerned over Chinese companies with a poor environmental record acquiring US assets. [ADVERTISEMENT] "We're proud that Tennessee is a red state, but just how red are we willing to go?" Environmentalist group Appalachian Voices points out that while the coal is mostly sent to other US states now, it may not be that way for long. Last year the US sent 12% of US coal overseas, and as alternatives to coal become cheaper in the US, the group predicts, that percentage will increase. It also warns that if the coal industry becomes more international, the profits from Tennessee coal will go overseas while the pollution will stay at home. Eckley Coal Breaker And Miners Village
The Eckley Miners’ Village is located about 9 miles east of Hazleton, PA. It was built in 1854 by Sharpe, Leisinring, and Company (later the Sharpe, Weiss, and Company) which opened the Council Ridge Colliery. The coal land was leased from the Tench Coxe Estate in Philadelphia. The village was originally named Fillmore, after President Millard Fillmore, but was renamed Eckley in 1857, after the grandson of Tench Coxe. When the lease expired in 1875, the Coxe family operated or leased the colliery. The population of Eckley peaked at about 1,000 around 1870 and then declined as strip mining replaced underground mining. The residents reflected the waves of immigrants who came to work in the mines, Welsh, English, German, and Irish in the earlier years, and Eastern Europeans in later years. In 1969, the Huss Coal Company sold the town to the Anthracite Historical Site Museum, Inc. In 1971, it was deeded to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Today, it is administered by The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Eckley is open to the public year-round. Through preservation and restoration efforts, the Village seeks to portray the way-of-life of the anthracite coal miners and their families in the 19th Century.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company seeks increase in tariffs
Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company seeks increase in tariffs. Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) sought increase in tariffs for mining as the company planned to scale up coal production to meet the growing demand of the cheap source of power generation, documents showed on Monday. SECMC, with revised expansion plans, approached Thar Coal Energy Board (TCEB), seeking contract stage coal tariff of $57/ton at 5.7 million tons per annum (mtpa) of mining capacity and $46.84/ton at 7.6mtpa of mining capacity. TECB convened a meeting on July 30 (Monday) to determine tariffs, a 20 percent equity return and $235.2 million project cost of mining, the document said. In June 2015, TCEB awarded a levelized composite tariff (phase-I) of $46.126/ton for the mine having a capacity of 3.8mtpa, leading to 6.5mtpa capacity mine. The phase-1 is to meet 3.8mtpa requirement of 660 megawatts plant of Engro Powergen Thar Limited, 1.9mtpa demand of another 330MW power plant and supply 0.8mtpa to Jamshoro Power Company Limited. SECMC, however, revised up its expansion plan due to surge in demand for Thar coal after the financial close of phase-I. The capacity of mine is expanded to 7.9mtpa, and will serve two 330MW power plants to be located next to the mine. Both Lucky Energy and Siddiqsons Energy signed agreements for receiving 1.9mtpa of coal each. The box-cut will be expanded to 1,000 meters over a course of 33 months during the expansion. An official said Lucky Energy requested coal offtake within 30 months of financial close while Siddiqsons Energy will be ready within 33 months of the financial close. Last month, Lucky Electric Power Company announced the financial close for its $1.081 billion of Thar coal-based power project.

Primitive Technology: Charcoal
I made a batch of charcoal using the mound method then stored it in baskets for later use. Charcoal is a fuel that burns hotter than the wood it's made from. This is because the initial energy consuming steps of combustion have taken place while making the charcoal driving off the volatile components of the wood (such as water and sap). The result is a nearly pure carbon fuel that burns hotter than wood without smoke and with less flame. Charcoal was primarily a metallurgical fuel in ancient times but was sometimes used for cooking too. To make the charcoal the wood was broken up and stacked in to a mound with the largest pieces in the center and smaller sticks and leaves on the out side. The mound was coated in mud and a hole was left in the top while 8 smaller air holes were made around the base of the mound. A fire was kindled in the top of the mound using hot coals from the fire and the burning process began (the hot coals are being poured in the top using a small pot at 2:38). The fire burned down the inside of the mound against the updraft. I reason that this is a better way to make charcoal as the rising flames have used up the oxygen and prevent the charcoal already made above them from burning while driving out even more volatiles . I watched the air holes at the base of the mound and when the fire had burned right up to each opening I plugged them with mud. Once all 8 holes had be sealed the hole in the top of the mound was sealed with mud and the mound left to cool. From lighting the mound to closing up the holes the whole process took about 4 hours. The next day when the mound was cool to the touch (this can take about 2 days sometimes) I opened the mound. The resulting charcoal was good quality. Some wood near the air entries had burned to ash though these were only small twigs and leaves. This is the reason small brush is put on the out side of the mound, to be burned preferentially to the larger wood on the inside thus protecting the large pieces of charcoal. The charcoal that was made was hard and shiny. When broken open it had the ray structure of the wood preserved. When moving the hand through it the charcoal sounded tinny, like coral on a beach being moved by waves. These are signs of good quality. Bad charcoal is soft, breaks easily and has a muffled sound. I intend to use the charcoal to produce hotter fires than I'm able to with wood alone. From my research, a natural draft furnace using wood (a kiln) can reach a maximum of 1400 c degrees whereas a natural draft furnace using charcoal can reach 1600 c degrees. Achieving high temperatures is necessary for changing material to obtain better technology (e.g. smelting ore into metal).
